Legal Internships – Academic Year

Academic Year Internship Program Details Program Dates: September 21, 2026 – April 23, 2027 Time Commitment: 16-24 hours per week. Exact schedule to be determined based on business need. We will do our best to accommodate course schedules. Format: Opportunities listed will require an intern to work from Universal City, CA. Academic Year Recruitment Timeline April 20: Applications open May 8: Applications close at 11:59pm ET (we recommend you submit your application as soon as possible – applications may close earlier due to applicant volume!) The division programs and markets content across leading entertainment brands Bravo, NBC and Peacock, and produces over 3,000 hours of television annually through Universal Studio Group, the studio business comprised of Universal Television, UCP, Universal International Studios and Universal Television Alternative Studio. Universal Film consists of the operations to produce, acquire, market and distribute filmed entertainment worldwide in various media formats for theatrical, home entertainment, television and other distribution platforms. Areas of placement may include, but are not limited to: Corporate Legal – Music Business & Legal Affairs (JD-level): NBCUniversal Music Business & Legal Affairs services an array of clients in the Film & Television portfolios. The overall landscape of Film includes distinct business functions that each touch a key segment area in the overall lifecycle of a film, from ideation to premiere. On the TV side, there is a vast portfolio of sports, news networks, streaming, entertainment networks, and significant television production operations, including scripted, alternative and late night, and a leading television stations group. This intern’s responsibilities may include the following: researching music rights, analysing and summarizing music deal terms, drafting music talent agreements, reviewing production content for music information, and assisting with tracking rights, analysis, and grid maintenance. Film Rights & Clearances (JD-level): The Film Rights & Clearances intern will work with the Legal, Bonus Legal, and Music Legal teams to research/analyze and provide guidance on rights, contractual requirements, studio policy, guild issues, and product licensing to a variety of teams within Global Distribution and Universal Pictures Home Entertainment. USG Business Affairs (undergrad-level): This intern will support the administrative arm of USG’s Business Affairs and Legal Affairs Departments. We support the two departments by keeping track of all deal points, tracking options & deadlines, talent fees, insurance and more. We work with IT to develop and maintain supporting applications to facilitate the deal-making and legal drafting functions, as well as robust reporting. We also interface with several other departments, such as Finance and Creative, as projects develop from an idea to a television series. The USG BA intern will assist with responsibilities including reviewing deal memos, agreements, and other correspondence; summarizing relevant deal points and updating Salesforce with fee information; and reviewing documents that have come into the department. USG Legal Affairs (JD-level): Interns will assist show lawyers with vetting television show scripts for legal risks, making clearance determinations for production-related materials, and other issue-spotting and analysis. Interns will also conduct legal research on issues that may arise during the production of both unscripted and scripted television shows, as well as assist the team by leveraging existing legal technology tools, like Microsoft Power Automate, to support the group’s efforts to streamline process, generate forms, and create efficiencies.
