Interactive Visual Designer, NBC News Digital
NBC News Digital is seeking an ambitious journalist with strong visual and interactive design skills. You should have proven design expertise and should be comfortable working in a multi-platform digital news organization. You should be excited about telling stories through visuals and have the technical skillset to build graphics and interactive projects for the news team. A typical day might involve: Taking data that a politics reporter has uncovered and turning it into a chart, diagram or illustration using D3, Datawrapper, or Adobe Illustrator. Helping a science reporter find or analyze the data that advances their reporting using Excel, Google Sheets, python or R. Working with the art team to lay out the page for a large-scale interactive using Figma or Illustrator. Developing another project with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. This is a hybrid role based in New York City. Candidates are expected to work in the newsroom in 30 Rockefeller Center three days a week. This position is represented by the NewsGuild-CWA. Responsibilities: Create charts, diagrams and visuals upon request and on deadline Collaborate with reporters, editors and other visual journalists around the newsroom to find visual angles to breaking and enterprise new stories across a variety of subjects Create smart approaches for visual stories across NBC News Digital. Grow visual storytelling on the website, app, social media, and other platforms. Work quickly and efficiently under tight deadlines.
